I work at a big chain grocery store in the midwest. Tonight was a pretty slow night, so I was cleaning and tidying up the registers and just sort of making myself look as busy as possible without doing any real work. Our Maintenance Guy (who we’ll call MG) comes up to me and says “Hey. I pissed off a customer. Come play manager for me and help me deal with this.” I’m usually really good with customers and have played CSR before. I was apprehensive, but I went anyways cause the maintenance guy and I are pretty tight. I walk over to our seating area where the woman (who we’ll call TC for Terrible Customer) is holding a prepackaged box of berries. Conversation is as follows.
MG: This is X. She works in our customer service department (I don’t. This is already going downhill.)ME: Is there a problem miss?
TC: Are you the manager?ME: (Obviously not, but whatever. How much worse can it get?) In a way, yes. I supervise the front end.TC: So you’re not the general manager?ME: No, but I’m happy to help if I can.TC: Well, I was sitting here, feeding my son, when your employee starts to clean. At this point, I glance over to see that her son is about 6 years old and is completely capable of feeding himself. He can walk and talk and have full conversations.
TC: And he’s touching garbage and all kinds of disgusting things and there are chemicals on his hands and he’s not wearing gloves. And then he had the nerve to take my bag and move it. I just want to file a complaint against him and against the store.ME: Ok. I can certainly help you do that, miss. Let me take you up to the front and get the manager for you, all right?MG: Again, miss, I’m very sorry. I didn’t even think about it. I was just in the zone, doing my job, you know?ME: I don’t think you had any malicious intent, did you MG? awkwardly chucklesMG: chuckles, too Of course not. Just trying to keep things clean.
